2017 - Big Day Out @ UQ

22nd July 2017

The IMPACT Centre's Big Day Out was held on Thursday July 20 at the University of Queensland – St Lucia.
Just over 500 students from 21 primary and secondary schools attended. The experience inspired students to think about their aspirations for the future.

Students then engaged in workshops with UQ staff and a tour run by UQ ambassadors. Workshops included Archaeology, Architecture, Global Change Institute, Education, Engineering Architecture and Information Technology Ethics, Game Theory, Health and Behavioural Science, History, Institute of Molecular Biology, Journalism and Communication, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble and more.

School Feedback

* 'Big Day Out is an excellent idea as it helps students to experience something out of their ordinary existence. In terms of connection to the real world the prosthetic limb challenge is brilliant. Many of our students had never heard of Engineers Without Borders and were suitably impressed with the concept.'

* 'Our children were in awe of the UQ campus. They loved the design lego challenge that they completed in the Architecture building. Dr Kinn gave us a wonderful insight into the history of the university and the buildings that surround the Great Court. One student said " I am so going to University when I leave school. I am so glad that I was part of the IMPACT program".'

* 'Our students loved the hands on activities presented by the Health faculty: the poo - doctor, getting bandaged up, wearing the pregnancy suit etc. It was also great for them to see graduates in their academic regalia - we did lots of "congratulations" as we passed. It inspired a number of our students to think about higher education and the type of learning that happens when you are an adult.'
