Our Reading, Writing and Numeracy Squads engage your class teachers in the student programs and provide them with access to digital resources.
The squads ensure that class teachers:
- understand the skills and strategies their students are learning via our reading, writing and numeracy programs
- plan how they can support the transfer of these skills and strategies to general classroom learning
- are able to access teaching and learning resources created by our team that can be used with any student.
Participating staff also build technology skills, connect with our online teachers and staff from other schools.
Participation is free, provided you have students enrolled in our READiscover, Just Write or Solve IT programs.
Reading Squad accompanies READiscover. Your teachers learn more about the teaching of higher-order comprehension skills including a range of simple, but highly effective, cognitive tools that help students identify the purpose and main idea of a text.
Writing Squad accompanies Just Write. Your teachers learn useful classroom strategies for the teaching of writing. These strategies include how to effectively plan a short narrative; how to connect ideas, paragraphs and sentences to make a cohesive text; and how to successfully establish a meaningful theme.
Numeracy Squad accompanies Solve IT. Your teachers learn a range of specific problem-solving strategies and Polya's four step approach to problem-solving. The sessions also focus on the literacy skills that are needed to interpret questions correctly.
A total of four web conferences are held after school on a fortnightly basis -
Wednesdays or Thursdays (TBA) during Round 3 from 3:30pm – 4:00pm.
Live participation is highly recommended but staff can access recordings and resources if they cannot attend the live session.
Testimonials, round 1, 2017
Reading Squad - Capability squads are a great way to improve our teachers' knowledge of how to teach reading. It gives us a deeper understanding of the content of the student's program.
Writing Squad - The Capability Squads online has been a flexible way of delivering PD in our school. Teachers have been able to do it in the comfort of their own classroom or office. It has been good for teachers to use the Learning Place and not only learn about the content of the course but feel more confident with online learning.
Numeracy Squad - There is a lot of opportunity to discuss different ways that teachers are teaching a particular subject. As a maths faculty, we took new resources and new ideas away from capability squad and think it has been quite useful.
