Course Information

Capable mathematics students do not always reach the Upper 2-3 Bands in NAPLAN Numeracy. In many cases, these students are skilled in performing calculations and applying rules, but are not proficient problem-solvers.

Our U2B Numeracy Boosters provide capable mathematics students with a process for solving problems as well as a bank of problem-solving strategies to use on demand. Students also develop literacy skills that are needed to interpret questions correctly.

Target Group

Students should have achieved Band 4, 5 or 6 in Year 3 NAPLAN Numeracy, 2016 or 2017 (or internal school data indicates that the student is likely to reach the Upper 2 Bands with targeted support).

Lesson Overview

Solve IT: Round 1 See IT: Round 2 Measure IT: Round 3
Number and Algebra: strategies to solve problems involving all 4 operations, including multi-step problems, inverse relationships and patterns. Geometry and Spatial Reasoning: strategies to visualise and compare 2D shapes, 3D objects, angles, symmetries and directional language. Measurement and Data Interpretation: strategies to examine and interpret calibrated scales, tables, time intervals, timetables, calendars, graphs and maps.

A pre-test provides diagnostic data and identifies each student's starting point, and a post-test measures distance travelled.

Both tests include NAPLAN-style numeracy problems. 

Schools are provided with a report containing pre- and post-test results, attendance data and survey feedback as well as qualitative report card comments for inclusion as an OLA.
